The why behind

Our stand on OHA certification.

Why we chose community care, client autonomy, and practice independence over state recognition.

Our decision

We are not pursuing OHA certification.

This was not a quick or careless decision. We have repeatedly and thoughtfully decided not to pursue OHA certification because the requirements do not align with how we protect our clients, our clinicians, or the communities we serve.

What guides us

We’re building something grounded in trust, safety, and community care — on our own terms.

Rebel Heart Therapy is a queer-owned and operated small business, created by and for LGBTQIA+, polyamorous, and kink communities. In a political climate where trans, queer, and other marginalized people face escalating threats — often from the very systems meant to protect us — we believe it is more important than ever to limit the reach of external institutions into our work and our clients’ lives.

Why this matters

Certification would require access we are not comfortable granting.

Clinical records

Client privacy matters.

Certification would require a level of state access to clinical records that does not align with our values or our commitment to client autonomy.

Internal policies

Practice independence matters.

We are protective of how outside systems reach into our internal operations, especially when those systems do not always understand the communities we serve.

Demographic data

Community safety matters.

Certification would also require access to demographic data, including for clients who do not use state-funded insurance. That does not feel aligned with our responsibility to queer, trans, polyamorous, and kink communities.

Not unconditional trust

Oregon has made progress. That does not mean every state system gets automatic access.

While Oregon has made meaningful progress in affirming queer and trans rights, our trust in state systems is not unconditional. This approach does not work for our practice. We are building something grounded in trust, safety, and community care — on our own terms.

The impact

We know this has affected clients.

We are heartbroken by the loss of access for CareOregon clients.

We are heartbroken by recent policy changes that prevent our CareOregon clients from accessing covered mental health care at Rebel Heart Therapy. These decisions have disrupted meaningful relationships. We did not want this — but we will not compromise the integrity or independence of our practice to maintain it.

To be clear

  • This was not a decision made lightly.
  • This is not about devaluing clients with state insurance.
  • This is about protecting the structure, autonomy, and integrity of our practice.

Community partners

We remain grateful for OHA-certified providers.

Both things can be true

We can decline certification and still value providers who choose it.

We remain grateful for OHA-certified partners in our community. Their presence allows us to confidently refer clients with state insurance to strong, affirming providers.
